I served a one-year term as a member of IUBSC from 2020-2021 and sat on the Communications and Marketing Sub-Committee. My primary motivation for wishing to return as a member of IUBSC is to continue our momentum in improving communication to staff throughout the university. During my one-year tenure on the IUBSC, I feel the Communications and Marketing Committee was able to make substantial progress toward more robust forms of communications to benefit IU staff. I managed the Facebook page, where we returned to a regular posting schedule and had an explicit goal of including more IU-related news and opportunities that staff may find important, especially opportunities to advance their understanding of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. I also played a role in helping conceptualize a newsletter campaign directed to new staff; our goal is to send a regular newsletter to all staff new to IU so we can welcome them early in their tenure and hopefully engage them in our efforts early on. If elected again, I’d like to explore ways to leverage social media in new ways to improve engagement, perhaps providing smaller, bite-sized ways to engage that do not require the time it takes to view a webinar. Can we create micro-opportunities via social media for staff to post feedback or give us ideas, or share tips with one another in navigating common concerns? How can we be an avenue for people to connect with one another, rather than the communication being largely one-way? This year of operating virtually has taught us that much can be achieved from behind a computer; I hope to use my experience last year to further improve our communication and engagement efforts. I am an avid runner and can often be found in early mornings on the B-Line Trail. I am also a part-time student in the Higher Education Ed.D. Program, studying the influence of philanthropy on higher education.
