Biography

BS '04 Indiana University

In Robert's role at IU he encourages faculty, staff, and students to use the systems, tools, and services provided to them by IU advanced computing to advance their research and academic studies. He supports training sessions, workshops, seminars, one-on-one consulting, and conferences which inform potential users of the wealth of advanced computing resources available to them. He also encourages youth to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by hosting activities and workshops to spark their interest and ignite their imagination as to what they might do when they go to college.

Ping's motivation for joining the BPC stems from his desire to give back to the IU community. He has lived in Bloomington since starting his undergraduate degree in 1989 and has been involved or worked for numerous departments on campus. He would like to help initiate positive-change at the University level regarding diversity, inclusion, work-life balance, and policies (and enforcement thereof) regarding smoking on campus. He would also like to help the BPC become a more visible entity.

Previously Robert was project manager for Prof. Beth Plale in the Data to Insight Center, IU Pervasive Technology Institute, founder and owner of Wavelength Communities, meeting support/event specialist at the Indiana Memorial Union, production manager of design production at Sunrise Publications/InterArt Distribution, and conference coordinator for IU Conferences.

Robert is coordinator of the IU GLB Speakers' Bureau, a founding member of Bloomington PRIDE, Inc., president and recruiting chair for the Quarryland Men's Chorus, and likes to hike, bike, landscape, and do home improvement in his spare time. He is married to World Ballroom Dance Champion Tom Slater and lives with his mother-in-law, son, four dogs, and a partridge in a pear tree.
